The Mechanics of Sprinting and Hurdling
Ralph Mann, Ph.D.
This manual presents the results of over 25 years of research on the mechanics of the sprints and
hurdles. Since 1982, under the direction of Dr. Ralph Mann, virtually every elite sprinter
and hurdler has been filmed and analyzed. This work presents both the results and
conclusions of this research, as well as the coaching and teaching application.
Part One covers the General Concepts of both events including identifying and maximizing the
limiting factors of performance, balancing training, and getting the most of potential.
Part Two describes all of the general (i.e. stride rate) and specific (i.e. leg speed)
variables that dictate sprint success. Results for both short and long sprints, as well as
male and female athletes are presented.
Part Three describes all of the general (i.e. hurdle time) and specific
(i.e. lead leg speed) variables that dictate hurdle success. Results for both short and
long hurdles, as well as male and female athletes are presented.
